32 Ideas to Help You Save Money on Utility Bills

Here are 32 ideas to help you on save money on utility bills: Home- Insulate you water heater with a blanket. You can easily save 3% on your heating bill.
- Lower you the temperature in the winter and in the summer raise it by 5 degree could save you up to 15% on your heating and air conditioning bills.
- Using ceiling fans in both the summer and winter can help you avoid any discomfort while you are conserving on your utility bills.
- Consider lowing your hot water tank to 130 – 140 degrees and turn it off when you will be gone for more than a day. Just don't forget to turn it back on when you get home before anyone takes a shower.
- Try using washable filters on your air exchange units if you have one.
- Unless you use a heat pump to heat and cool your home, use a programmable thermostat while your sleeping and out of the house.
- Instead of using your stove, consider using your grill instead.
- Especially if you live in a warmer climate, plant trees and shrubs on the west side of your house. Helps reduce the heat of the sun keeping your home cooler in warmer months.
Lighting- Replace 60-watt light bulbs for 100-watt bulbs.
- You may consider using energy efficient light bulbs where ever possible. Keep in mind that florescent light bulbs can cause eye strain if you use them frequently.
- Most of the street lights utilize LED lights because they use very little electricity. Change to LED's lights whenever possible. Right now, you can find night lites and flashlights that being made relatively inexpensively with LED's. As additional LED lighting becomes more affordable, consider changing over.
- Turn off lights and appliances when you exit a room. Train your kids to do so as well.
- Use light dimmers in dining rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms when practical.
- Consider timers on outdoor lighting.
Water- Using water-flow regulators in shower heads and toilet bowls in older homes, can reduce the water flow by 50% without you really noticing a difference in the pressure.
- Leaky faucets can waste any where from 6-10 gallons a day. So you will want to have it fixed.
- Run your dishwasher only when it is full. You might be glad to hear that hand washing wastes more water than a dishwasher.
- A dripping faucet or toilet can cost you a couple of gallons per hour so you might want to learn how to fix leaky faucets or find someone who does.
- When washing your hands, brushing your teeth or shaving, turning off the water can also save on water.
Phone- If you use a land line, think about cutting services like call waiting, caller ID if you don't really need it.
- Think about dropping your land line if it wouldn't increase your cell phone usage. Check your cell phone plan first. More and more people don't use a land line. Voip is cheaper. Check out

The calls sound better than some Voip. The biggest drawback is you must keep your computer on to receive or make calls. But its only $39. the first year. After that, $20. each year.
- Review your cell phone plan and make sure it is tailored to meet your needs. Look at how much you text, minutes you use.
Other- Check all windows and doors for leaks. Sealing any leaks.
- If you have an aging appliance, you may want to consider replacing it for a more energy efficient one, rather than postponing the purchase.
- Check with your utility company to see if their is a difference in the rates used at different times of days.
- Set your computer to turn off when it's not being used. Especially at night.
- Unplugging or turning off your TV's, computers, or other components from your surge protectors can save you up to 25% of your electric bill.
- Keep up with the minor repairs at you home before they become major.
- Make sure your attic has enough insulation and all your windows are double pane.
- Pay your utilities on time. Late fees can really add up. Some only charge a couple of dollars, but my water company charges $15. even if you are only 1 day late.
- Check with your local home-improvement store for additional ideas.
