Saving Money On Groceries
Are You Looking For Easy Ideas For Saving Money On Groceries?
Do You Have An Idea You Would Like to Share With Other Moms?
If you're looking to trim your expenses and save money on groceries, here are numerous ideas to help get you started! - Before you go shopping, make a list. Plan to include any specials. Avoid
impulse shopping
Stores know what they are doing when they stuff the checkout line with items "you can't leave without."
If you see something you want to buy, plan to include it in next weeks shopping. You will be surprised how many times your don't really want it next week.
- Is there anything you can buy in bulk from a discount store such as Costco, Sam's Club, or B.J.'s? Make sure that before you start purchase anything from these stores you know your prices first. Buying dry goods, beans, rice, flour, cans, and frozen food in bulk from a discount store can save you hundreds of dollars per year.
If it is something you purchase regularly and you know your prices, go ahead. If not, make a list of what you usually buy and compare it to where you regularly shop. - Some moms enjoy shopping at Sam's club or Costco at lunchtime for a quick lunch sometimes. Just the samples alone can sometimes hold you over for a couple hours. Plus since the food is usually tasty, providing ideas for future meals.
- Shop with a friend. Shopping at Sam's Club has helped me save almost half on my meats and vegetables and a couple of other items. Go shopping with a friend and split some of the bulk items. I usually go with my cousin, we end up splitting some items that we might not have wanted to buy otherwise. I mean, you want to save money on items like toilet paper, but who wants to spend $20. at one time. When we split it, it cost $10. a piece, and we are both happy...
Compare prices at other grocery stores. It may be convenient to shop locally, but is that convenience worth the extra $30. or $40. per week you would save driving an extra 5 minutes?
Are Your Habits Costing You Money?
I have a friend who was commenting about how little you get for your money shopping these days. I asked her where she shopped, when she told me, I suggested that maybe one week she should try where I was shopping because I was not spending nearly as much as she was. She waited a couple of weeks, but then broke down one week. She was really glad she did. She was able to get a couple of extra bags of groceries for the save price she was spending at the other store. She had to drive a few minutes more to get there, but it was still worth it. It really made her re-think her weekly shopping. Since then, she has found a couple of more ideas to help save money on shopping that she has shared with me!
Paper or Plastic
Don't think you can save money by just using cash instead of plastic?Don't think you can? Well here's a story you'll want to hear about one family that saved 25% in 30 days by using cash only.... Paper or Plastic So, how much can you save if you use only cash?
Now You Can Fill Your Freezer With Delicious Home-Cooked Meals. Save Money - Save Time -
Eat Well and Still Lose Weight
Cook just once a week (or once a month!) and eat what you and your family loves. Your family members will enjoy the convenience ofhomemade dinners. You'll love how tasty and healthy they really are. Plus, think about all the extra time you'll have when you don't have to cook every single night!
Buying the Loss Leaders
I had another friend that would take all the grocery flyers each week, purchase the loss leaders, (the items the grocery store sells close to cost to get you in their store) each week. She may have spent a little extra time, but she was able to really cut back on her grocery bill considerably. Be careful though, sometimes the savings is insignificant or misleading. (check the weight, the number of items required to purchase) Also, one stores sales price may be another store's regular price.
Green Pays Off
When purchasing fruits and vegetables, store them in green bags. They work great. My fruits and vegetables last at least twice as long. You can clean and re-use the bags up to twenty times. The money you save extending the life of your food more than makes up for the minor cost of the bags.Since I started using green bags, I buy and throw out much less. You can find them at WalMart, Walgreens, CVS or even online at

Freeze It
Sometimes purchasing a freezer can be an asset. You can stock up whenever there is a sale. Works great if you have a hunter or fisherman in the family.Plus, a friend of mine purchases organic, grass feed cows for less then $3. per pound regardless of the cut of meat. Rib-eyes, fillet mignon. She orders the cow, pre-cut, pre-packaged. Check out the farms in your area. She also buys organic chicken when it goes on sale. She watches the stores in her area and keeps checking back to see if they go on sale close to the expiration date. Sometimes she has been able to get them for less then you would pay for regular chicken. She says the chicken tastes much better. Why should you have to forgo quality for price?
Make A Plan
Plan your errands and do your shopping in the same area at one time, if you can, saving you money on gas. Take a little time to plan the best possible route. One mom I know, has had a lot of success shopping at Dollar Stores or Big Lots. She pays about $1. for items that she would normally pay about $2.50 at the grocery store such as jelly, etc. And you really never know what you will find at Odd Lots. Sometimes you find something your were looking for, other times nothing.
More Than Enough to Share
I met a lady who spends very little on her groceries. She loves to find a bargin. She will find hot dogs rolls on sale for about $.10 apiece. She will buy bags of them. She gives some to her mom and sisters, and freezes the rest. When she defrosts the rolls, she toasts them and you can't tell the difference between fresh rolls.Invite friends and family over for a meal or a potluck.

More Strategies to Save Money
- Never go shopping when you are hungry or feeling down.
- Buy your cosmetics and other non-grocery items at discount store or drugstores.
- Eat at home is less expensive then eating out, so cook at home more often.
- Invest in a crockpot if you don’t have time to cook.
- If you see anything that you use on a regular basis on sale, stock up. But don't break your budget.
- Make your own coffee instead of stopping at Starbucks. Take a couple of minutes to make your own. Try different brands that you might like.
- If you can, cook as much as possible from scratch. It is always cheaper than pre-packed.
- Bring your calculator with you to avoid any surprises at the check out and to keep track of your purchases as you go along.
Try to watch the prices when your cashier rings them up. Sometimes the listed prices and the price on the computer are different. The WalMart near me will give you an extra $3.00 off if you find a product that was incorrectly priced. (Plus they correct the price.)
Spend Less On Vitamins and Supplements If you buy vitamins and supplements normally from a healthfood store, consider looking online for the same products. I've found that most of the items that I purchase, I can now get for 1/3 to 1/2 off what I used to pay. That includes shipping which a lot of times if you purchase in bulk or on autoship, you can get for free. I've found Amazon.com, and MotherNature.com great places to shop.Amazon also has other household products that you could possibly save money on, just make sure you know your prices.
Without Sacrifing Taste
If you're like most people and do not like the taste of tap water, ugh, invest in a water filter instead of buying so many bottled waters. Water filters like Brita and Pur filter out additives like chlorine and leave your tap water tasting just like fresh spring water. After a week of not buying bottled water the water filter will pay for itself.Start a garden and grow some of your food. It's amazing how much better vegetables you grow taste compared to what you purchase in the store. If you've never had a garden before, start small. As you gain more experience, add to it each year.
Saving With Coupons
Don't forget to bring your coupons. Find out a head of time, what days are double coupons days. Even if you use coupons, I have found a lot of times it is still cheaper to purchase generic brands. So it pays to compare price and value. Here's a couple of websites to help you find additional coupons that you can use:
