Tips for Time Management
There are a couple of tips for time management that you will want to implement.
One of the first strategies you will want to implement is to set up a schedule to keep track of the projects you need accomplish and appointments that you need to keep.
You have a couple of options for setting up your schedule. Use a weekly/monthly planner. The planner can be either a paper or an electronic. Which ever planner you choose, make sure you keep it handy. If possible, take it with you or as soon as you get back to your office, make an entry whenever you make a commitment for your time.
Before you even begin to schedule work times, since your family is your biggest priority, block off times that you already have commitments made for your family. Whatever your child's sport or activity is, include it in your schedule. Probably your number one reason for working from home. Don't forget to allow for travel time. One of the biggest benefits of working from home is the ability to schedule your own hours. Working around your family's schedule. It can also be one of your biggest challenges. Either working too much or too little.
Then decide how many hours you have available to work on your business. You may have additional challenges such as working around a small child's schedule. Pencil in work time around the "normal" nap time. If they have one. Or when someone else can watch them or after they go to sleep for the night.
Be realistic. Don't over schedule your time. Things will come up, so you may have to be a little flexible.
Take Five
Take a few minutes at the end of each day and at the end of the week to plan your schedule. Include a list of the goals you plan to complete. Work on the most important. What has to be done first. What can and needs to be completed. Don't over do it or worry if you don't complete everything on you list. It's OK even if you only completed 3 or 4 items. The objective is not to overwhelm you, but to be the most productive. Accomplishing the most important tasks, leaving the less important tasks that will provide mediocre results, for last.
Try to group all you phone calls together as much as possible. Delegate tasks when you can. Keep in mind that you are still responsible for the completion and quality of the project.Besides appointments with your customers, schedule your time for reading as you would any other appointment. If you have a pile to read, schedule about 15-30 minutes into your day. Daily, or a couple of times per week. You be the judge. When you are finished reading the article, magazine, or book, make sure you either use the information, file it, or get rid of it.
Schedule a block of time for writing for your website, articles, blogs, or newsletters the same way. It can be difficult to write longer than two hours at a time. If you need more time, you might want to break that time up.
Email and the Internet
Email and the internet are two areas that have the greatest potential for wasting time. For most businesses, checking your email at the beginning of your work day and at the end would be sufficient. Unless you have an online auction business. Then you will need to check your mail an additional time or two. If you need to, set a time limit otherwise you'll find yourself not get any other work done.
When doing research on the web, check with yourself every 15 minutes to make sure your on track with what you need to, not on some bunny trail...The internet makes it really easy to get distracted.
Lastly...
Make sure you schedule time for yourself. Down time. To rejuvenate and refresh yourself. As moms, we tend to stretch ourselves out. Putting the needs of others before your own. After a while, you may find yourself a little depleted. With nothing left to give. Make the commitment to set aside a little regular time for yourself, wither a few minutes to read a good book, taking a walk, getting a manicure, or visiting with a good friend. Whatever energizes you. So you can continue to meet the needs of the ones you love...
